What is Linux?

Linux is an operating system

An operating system is the software that runs your computer, and without it, you wouldn't be able to even run a computer.

Other operating systems include Microsoft® Windows, Mac OS, Unix and many more.

What makes Linux stand out?

Linux is less expensive, faster, more stable, and much more powerful then the most popular OS (Windows).

Which distribution is right for me?

There are several Linux distributions; think of them as flavors. Some are better for newbies, while others are more powerful and built for programmers. Think of it, as an operating system made just for you!

Mandrake and Linspire are the easiest versions and most recommended for somebody who is entering the world of Linux.

RedHat is the most popular and the best all-purpose version available.

Debian and Slackware are some of the more advanced versions. Debian is known to be the most powerful and advanced version available. Slackware is the closest Linux version to the Unix operating system.

Where do I start?

If you would like to start out with a computer system pre-loaded with a Linux-based operating system, then visit Walmart.com and purchase a Linpire (a very user-friendly version of Linux) computer system. They start out just under $200 for a complete computer system (excluding monitor). Plus, they only charge $14.35 for shipping last time I checked!

If you have broadband and would like to download Linux yourself, then visit LinuxISO.org and download the whole discs, then burn your own installation CDs.

If you would like to purchase the boxed version and receive support, then visit Linux Central and purchase the retail version.
