A Linux user group is a group of people who all share something in common...Linux! There are LUG's all around the world, and they are a great place to start when getting involved in the Linux community. Whether you are a newbie or an old hacker, there is something for everyone at your local LUG group.

Finding a good meeting location

A very common place to meet is the local library. Other ideal locations can be offices, schools classrooms, business meeting rooms, restaurant group dining rooms and auditoriums. It should be nearby for the majority of the members; if you live near a city, then try to find a location within or nearby that city.

Things every group should have

Here is a basic list of things that every LUG should have:

  • Group goals...know what the group's purpose is
  • A mailing list is a great way to encourage an active group

Marketing your group

Get listed on the major group directory sites. Here are some great places to get your group listed:

Get listed in your local events calendar. Maybe even try to get a story in your local newspaper.

Let the Linux community know your coming by posting a message in the comp.os.linux.announce newsgroup.

Don't forget to get a Web site, and submit it to the Yahoo Directory, Open Directory and the search engines!
